I've missed blogging these past few weeks. A lot has happened since then. Truth is I've been exhausted, bone tired. Yep. I mean, at the point where there aren't enough hours in a day. But I'm back! And this post is dedicated to color, and picking the right ones for your rooms.
The right way to pick your room colors is to think of a men's business formal wear, i.e. a suit. Most men's suits are based on the 60-30-10 rule (see HGTV.com/decorating for more details):
- Pants and jacket are dominant (60%)
- Shirt, a secondary/complimentary color (30%)
- Tie adds a pop (accent) of color (10%)
I decided the color story for my room would be gray, ivory, and yellow. How did I come by that? I picked the pattern for my custom headboard eons before this makeover started. Then I figured out what colors would go best with it, and yellow seemed the best fit for my country theme. It all starts with an item that inspires you, it could be anything. The headboard was my inspiration. Grey is also a very relaxing color, perfect for a bedroom. To summarize, the color story for my bedroom is:
- Grey - walls, headboard, drapes (60%)
- Ivory - dresser, duvet cover (30%)
- Yellow - nightstands, quilt (10%)
So, why should you care so much about color? It actually sets the tone and influences the feeling you have when entering the room. A bedroom should feel relaxing and comforting. The living room a little more energizing, and so on...
The Colors of the Rainbow
All this talk of color makes me think of the focus the media and many have placed on skin color these last few weeks, due to the Trayvon Martin shooting. It truly makes me sad, and upset by the way his life was suddenly taken from him. I remember singing this song at school and church:
Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world
Whether they are black or white, all are precious in His sight
Jesus loves the little children of the world.
A very simple song, but what if we sang it and believed it? It could make a world of a difference. Colossians 3:14 makes it pretty clear what this world is missing,
"And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity"
When we don't love our neighbors, crazy, awful things can happen.

Hi Kyla,
ReplyDeleteI love this blog. I did an online interior decorating course way back when and I agree with the importance of colour. Also I am now a graphic designer so my life is all about colour. The 60-30-10 rule based on men's formal wear is quite interesting, thats a new one to me! I love mixing analogous, complementary, triad colour and monochromatic schemes with an accent colour in my designs.
As for the colours of our skin. Its is all in the mix...what a dull place it would be if we were all the same. Our Creator is the best Designer!
All the best with your design work and this blog! I will keep reading.
